Ayurveda & Digestive Disorders – IBS & Grahani

Digestive complaints are among the most common conditions encountered in clinical practice. This English-language e-learning module focuses on the Ayurvedic concept of Grahani, with special attention to its relationship with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) and other disorders of the Anna Vaha Srotas.

Vd. Sayali Kendarkar combines classical Ayurvedic knowledge with practical clinical experience. You will learn not only which symptoms and treatment principles are associated with Grahani, but especially how to differentiate between different patterns and how to arrive at an appropriate therapeutic approach.

What does the course cover?

The module includes:

• Grahani and IBS from an Ayurvedic perspective;
• the central role of Agni and Ama;
• involvement of Vata, Pitta and Kapha;
• different patterns of diarrhoea, constipation, gas, bloating and abdominal pain;
• diet, lifestyle and stress as causative and maintaining factors;
• Deepana and Pachana;
• Grahi dravyas and relevant herbs and formulas;
• the use and differentiation of Holisan remedies;
• practical treatment strategies and clinical decision-making.

Grahani is not approached simply as an isolated intestinal disorder. From an Ayurvedic perspective, it is part of a broader disturbance in which Agni, Doshas, Ama, emotions, diet and lifestyle interact.

Practical and clinically applicable

An important part of the course consists of the practical explanations and clinical discussions by the teacher. These sections show how an experienced Ayurvedic physician actually reasons in practice: what do you look for, how do you distinguish between different patterns, which treatment direction is appropriate, and which remedy should be selected – or avoided?

Ayurveda cannot be learned effectively from definitions or lists of herbs alone. Its clinical value becomes clear when theory, observation, differentiation and experience are brought together. This makes the module especially useful for therapists and other professionals who want to translate Ayurvedic knowledge into actual clinical application.

You will get a solid overview of all Holisan products and remedies regarding respiratory system support and specific respiratory disorders. This will be interlaced with helpful guidelines regarding differentiation of products: when to chose which remedies (and when not). This makes this track highly useful for your clinical use and application!

The course has been developed and produced for Holisan by Coen van der Kroon / Ayurveda, using his ALX Digital Ayurvedic Studies System. The basic principle behind ALX is that access to information is not the same as learning. Today, Google, websites and AI can provide enormous amounts of information about Ayurveda within seconds. But this information is often fragmented, of varying quality, and not automatically organised into a meaningful learning pathway. The material is organised into clear subjects, learning objectives, assessment moments and practical application questions. Why are the tests so extensive?

The multiple-choice questions and tests following the lessons are an intentional part of the ALX system. They are not only designed to check whether you remembered something. By actively answering questions, you are required to retrieve the material, distinguish between related concepts and apply what you have learned to practical situations.

Course structure

The course consists of several connected lessons:

Lesson 1 – Foundations
Digestive function, IBS, Grahani, Agni and the Ayurvedic understanding of digestive dysfunction.

Lesson 2 – Causes & Clinical Patterns
Causes, symptoms, Dosha patterns and the influence of diet, lifestyle and stress.

Lesson 3 – Treatment & Application
Treatment principles, herbs and remedies, diet, lifestyle and practical clinical application.

Lesson 4 – Integration & Assessment
Review, extensive testing and integration of the complete module.

Study at your own pace – within a maximum of 3 months

You follow the course online through TalentLMS and can work through the video lessons, additional information and tests at your own pace. The complete e-learning programme must be completed within a maximum period of 3 months. This time limit is intentional. The aim is to prevent the course from remaining open indefinitely or being studied only in disconnected fragments. Instead, participants are encouraged to work through the material subject by subject, testing and integrating each part before moving on.

Working with the course regularly within a defined period helps keep the lessons connected. New knowledge can then be linked directly to material studied earlier. You therefore determine your own study pace, while completing the full learning pathway within three months (Learn → Understand → Test → Apply → Integrate). This combines flexibility with enough structure to support genuine learning and integration.

Assessment and completion

Participants are tested with quizzes and a final test and are given the opportunity to ask questions in the Master Class. The Master Class must be booked and paid for separately. The course has a study load of 4 ECTS and offers an in-depth and practically applicable insight into the Ayurvedic approach to respiratory health, with a strong focus on differentiation and effective remedies. A certificate based on 4 ECTS will be awarded after completion of both components: the e-learning program and the Master Class.
